Ever wonder where Cologne’s silk production flourished? Let’s talk about Kriel.

Kriel is a neighborhood in Cologne. It played a significant role in the city’s economic history.

Cologne was once a major silk production center. This peaked around the mid-16th century. At the time, Cologne was one of the largest production centers north of the Alps. Paris was the other big player.

Around 1500, silk cloth was Cologne’s most successful export. This success was largely due to the Silk Office. It was a guild that predominantly employed women. This was unusual for the time. Only Cologne and Paris maintained this practice. It allowed many female guild masters to become wealthy.

Fygen Lutzenkirchen was the most famous. She was the most successful silk entrepreneur in Cologne. Around 1498, she was one of Cologne’s wealthiest citizens.

Silk production relied heavily on the silk trade. Raw silk was imported from northern Italy via Venice and Milan. The wholesalers prefinanced the raw materials. They left the craftswomen to work from home.

Cologne’s clergy was a major buyer of silk products. Silk products were also exported to Frankfurt, Strasbourg, and Leipzig. Cologne merchants faced intense competition in Flanders. By 1560, Cologne had 60 to 70 silk merchants. They processed 700 bales of silk each year.

The industry declined after 1560. Kriel, however, retains its legacy. It reminds us of Cologne’s rich textile history. It shows the economic power once held by women in the city.

So when you’re in Kriel, imagine the looms. Think of the women. Picture them weaving silk that was traded across Europe. It all happened right here in Kriel.
