In 1867, however, several congregations were established. The church began to grow steadily. By 1930, the Igreja Metodista do Brasil declared its autonomy. It became independent.

From its very beginning, the Methodist Church placed great emphasis on education. Today it runs 37 schools. These range from nursery level to higher education. Two Methodist universities are included. Around 70,000 students attend these institutions.

The Igreja Metodista Wesleyana is part of this educational commitment. It contributes to the intellectual and spiritual growth of the community.

Ministers both men and women are prepared in the theological seminary in S\u00e3o Paulo. Two other seminaries exist. There are six regional centers for theological formation too. The church ordained its first woman elder in 1974. It was the first denomination in Brazil to recognize women’s rights to serve in the ministry.

Affirming the social dimension of the gospel, the church established day-care centers. Orphanages and homes for the aged were founded. Social and community centers, and medical clinics were also created.

During twenty years of political oppression, many Methodists were persecuted. This was for their social stance.

Since 1982, official positions have pushed the church into active witness. They struggle to transform Brazilian society along lines of justice and freedom. This includes equal opportunities for the oppressed and poor.

The Igreja Metodista Wesleyana embraces these goals. It actively contributes to social justice within its community.

In 2022, the Igreja Metodista do Brasil had 262,449 members. They were spread across 1,015 churches.

The Igreja Metodista Wesleyana also maintains close relationships with other Methodist churches. These include the United Methodist Church in the USA.
