Gatekeeper’s Cottage

Nestled beside the Great Western Highway, the Gatekeeper’s Cottage whispers tales of a bygone era. This unassuming cottage, built in 1868, once played a vital role in the bustling railway history of the Blue Mountains. Imagine a time when steam trains reigned supreme, chugging along the tracks that carved their way through this rugged landscape. The Gatekeeper’s Cottage stood guard at a level crossing, where the road and railway intersected. The gatekeeper, the resident of this humble abode, held the responsibility of ensuring safe passage for both trains and road traffic. With the shrill whistle of an approaching steam engine, the gatekeeper would spring into action, closing the gates across the road, allowing the train to thunder past. The Gatekeeper’s Cottage at Mount Victoria is one of the few remaining witnesses to this era. Originally, twelve such cottages dotted the Blue Mountains, each a vital link in the railway network. Today, only six survive, and a mere four remain habitable on their original sites. This very cottage, here at Mount Victoria, ceased its gatekeeping duties in 1902. The arrival of a new bridge, necessitated by track duplication, rendered the level crossing obsolete. The cottage, however, lives on, now a privately owned residence. The gardens surrounding the Gatekeeper’s Cottage retain their original charm, a testament to their historical significance. Stone terraces and a winding path lead towards the railway line, marking the spot where the gates once stood. A stone wall, adorned with gothic details, encloses the southern side of the garden, adding to the picturesque nature of this historic site. The cottage itself is a simple structure, yet its design echoes the grandeur of the Victorian Rustic Gothic style. Steeply sloping gabled roofs, embellished with decorative fretwork, narrow windows, and sturdy stone walls create a picturesque scene against the backdrop of the mountains. While the road now rises above the cottage to meet the 1902 bridge, significantly altering its relationship with the highway, the Gatekeeper’s Cottage stands as a silent sentinel. It reminds us of a time when the rhythm of steam engines and the vigilance of the gatekeeper shaped the journeys through these mountains.
