Hidden amidst the gentle slopes of the Vienna Woods lies Katastralgemeinde Grub. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, a world away from the bustling city of Vienna, yet still within its embrace. Katastralgemeinde Grub isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a living tapestry woven with threads of history, nature, and resilience. First mentioned in a document from Heiligenkreuz Abbey in 1254, Katastralgemeinde Grub has witnessed centuries of change. It existed as an independent municipality until 1938. Then it briefly merged with other villages. But it regained its independence in 1954. Finally, in 1972, it became part of the Wienerwald municipality, a union that continues to this day. Imagine the small village in 1938, with its bustling community of tradespeople. The address book of Austria from that year lists Fuhrwerker (carters), Gastwirte (innkeepers), Gemischtwarenhändler (general store owners), Holzhändler (timber merchants), and more. They formed the backbone of Katastralgemeinde Grub, contributing to its unique character. Katastralgemeinde Grub has also seen its share of tragedy. On August 6, 1981, a military jet crashed into a house in the Ameisbückel, a small part of the Katastralgemeinde. This devastating event brought heartbreak to the community. Despite such setbacks, Katastralgemeinde Grub has persevered. Today, it thrives as a haven for horse lovers. Equestrian activities have brought a new wave of tourism to the area. Many Viennese have also established second homes in Katastralgemeinde Grub, drawn to its tranquility. The area boasts a kindergarten and a modern community center, housed within the building of the Grub Volunteer Fire Department. The St. Joseph’s Parish Church, commissioned by Heiligenkreuz Abbey in 1968, stands as a testament to the enduring connection between Katastralgemeinde Grub and its historical roots. Though tucked away in the Vienna Woods, Katastralgemeinde Grub is accessible by public bus from Mödling. For those seeking a deeper connection with nature, Katastralgemeinde Grub offers an abundance of hiking and riding trails. The Rossgipfel, the highest elevation at 633 meters above sea level, offers a challenging climb for adventurous hikers. And for those who appreciate art and history, the renovated Leonardi Chapel in the Bachgasse hosts small exhibitions and openings. Katastralgemeinde Grub, a small village with a big history, invites you to discover its charm.
