“Born with inherent Buddha-mind” is a concept linked to Shinzen-ji. Shinzen-ji Temple was founded in 1691 by Bankei Yotaku. Bankei was a Zen master. He revived this temple that had fallen into disrepair.
Shinzen-ji may not hold grand structures from its initial founding. However the temple retains relics of the past. You can still see the Hall of Enma. Also, the Benzaiten Shrine stands. These existed before the temple’s revival.
Within Shinzen-ji are statues. The statues depict Enma Daio brothers. There is also an image of Benzaiten. These wooden figures are of unknown age. They continue to be venerated.
Bankei Zenji is known for “Unborn Zen”. He used simple language to connect with people. His teachings attracted many followers. Bankei spoke of innate Buddha-mind.
Bankei said the following about inherent Buddha-mind. “What your parents gave you at birth is only the Buddha-mind.” He further explained this inherent Buddha-mind. “That Buddha-mind given by your parents is unborn and miraculously illuminating. With the unborn, everything is resolved”. These famous words capture Bankei’s teachings. He emphasized the Buddha-mind one has from birth.
Shinzen-ji Temple is located in Tokyo’s Katsushika district. The temple offers a glimpse into Zen Buddhist history. It also shows the enduring appeal of Bankei’s simple yet profound teachings.
