What if walls could talk? Here at the Arlington Korean United Methodist Church, they would whisper tales of faith, resilience, and community. The Arlington Korean United Methodist Church stands as a testament to the Korean American spirit. Its story began on July 3, 1994. It has been a beacon of hope and faith for the local Korean community ever since. The church’s history is deeply intertwined with the journey of Korean immigrants in the area.

The story begins with a Korean immigrant church. Galilee Methodist Church, led by Rev. Samuel Shin, borrowed space on Lee Highway. This location isn’t far from where the Arlington Korean United Methodist Church stands today. Under Rev. Shin’s leadership, Galilee Methodist Church merged with an English-speaking American congregation. They shared a building, which would eventually become the home of the Arlington Korean United Methodist Church. The merged church became St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Over the years, the demographics shifted. The American congregation dwindled, leaving the Korean members as the primary community.

A succession of pastors shaped the church’s identity and mission. Rev. Hyo-sik Kim became the second senior pastor in 1998. Then, in 1999, Rev. Jae-yoo Yoo arrived from Wesley Church, a Korean immigrant church in Maryland. He brought his congregation to join St. Mark’s, further solidifying the church’s Korean American character. Rev. Kwang-hoon Lee took the helm in 2005. He spearheaded several short-term missions to Honduras and Nicaragua. He also initiated “Neighbor Invitation Days,” fostering connections with the wider community. In 2013, Rev. Mi-hye Kim became the fifth senior pastor. She continued the outreach programs. She also led the church in celebrating its 20th anniversary.

A significant moment came in 2016. The church officially became the Arlington Korean United Methodist Church. This name change reflected its distinct identity and mission. Under the leadership of Rev. Ryu, appointed in 2017, the church’s outreach expanded. They supported missionaries in Tanzania and Arizona. They partnered with local organizations like AFAC and EcoAction Arlington. The church also renovated its educational spaces, hosted workshops, and continued its tradition of community events. More recent initiatives include partnering with PathForward to serve the homeless and a meal ministry for local residents.

The Arlington Korean United Methodist Church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the power of faith, community, and service. It stands as a symbol of the Korean American experience, a place where faith and culture intertwine to create a vibrant and welcoming spiritual home.
