Have you ever felt the need to appease a volcano? Asama Shrine embodies centuries of reverence for Mount Fuji. It is one of about 1,300 Asama shrines in Japan. These shrines honor the deity of volcanoes. They are dedicated to Konohanasakuya-hime. She is the cherry blossom princess and goddess of Mount Fuji.
Imagine yourself transported back to the year 865. Mount Fuji erupted for ten days. Cinders and ash reached as far as Tokyo Bay. Emperor Seiwa commanded the construction of Kawaguchi Asama Shrine. His goal was to calm the volcano goddess.
Most Asama shrines offer views of Mount Fuji. If distance obscures the view, miniature replicas stand within the grounds. They are crafted from rocks of the mountain itself. Kawaguchi Asama Shrine is special. It allows three forms of worship: distance worship, training, and climbing.
The shrine became a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2013. This recognizes its role in Mount Fuji’s religious worship. It is also a source of artistic inspiration.

Asama Shrine includes subordinate shrines. Hahanoshirataki Shrine features a waterfall. It freezes solid in winter. Ubuyagasaki Shrine sits on Mount Fuji’s northern shore. It offers a unique view of Fuji and the shrine together.
