Yanagishima Elementary School, a place where history whispers through the rustling leaves of willow trees. Did you know its story stretches back to 1931? Originally, a part of Honjo Elementary School was relocated here to Yanagishima, Sumida Ward. That same year, on September 29th, Yanagishima Elementary School officially opened its doors to 171 eager students. The school has weathered many storms, both literal and figurative. In 1945, during World War II, the school building was tragically destroyed by fire. A temporary wooden structure served as a classroom until a new building was completed in 1956. The school’s name also changed over time, reflecting the shifting administrative boundaries of Tokyo. It finally became Sumida Ward Yanagishima Elementary School in 1976. Even a fire caused by lightning in 1950 couldn’t extinguish the spirit of Yanagishima. The students and staff temporarily relocated to Iwate Prefecture until their school was rebuilt. The very land Yanagishima Elementary stands on has a rich history. The area was once known as Yanagishima Village, its name possibly derived from the abundance of willow trees. The village flourished due to its strategic location along the Kita-Jikkengawa and Yoko-Jikkengawa rivers, which provided crucial access to Edo, the former name of Tokyo. Today, Yanagishima Elementary School continues to nurture young minds. It stands as a testament to the resilience and enduring spirit of the community, a modern institution built on the foundations of a fascinating past.
