Lost souls whisper on the wind as we stand before the Alter Friedhof. This old Jewish cemetery is part of Vienna’s vast Zentralfriedhof. It is a place of history, memory and reflection.

The Vienna Central Cemetery wasn’t always here. Back in 1863, Vienna realized its existing cemeteries wouldn’t be enough. The city was growing fast. Leaders predicted Vienna would boom by the century’s end. So, they planned a huge new cemetery far from the city center. This became the Zentralfriedhof.

Opening day for the Zentralfriedhof was All Saints’ Day in 1874. But the cemetery’s interdenominational character caused controversy. Burying different faiths together bothered conservative Catholics. The city’s support for a separate Jewish section added fuel to the fire. A small, quiet ceremony opened the Zentralfriedhof. Mayor Baron Cajetan von Felder and Cardinal Joseph Othmar Rauscher wanted to avoid public uproar. The next day, the cemetery officially opened. Jacob Zelzer was the first burial. His grave still exists.

The Zentralfriedhof sprawls across 2.5 square kilometers. It holds over 330,000 gravesites. That is around 3 million people. Up to 25 burials happen each day. Only Hamburg’s Ohlsdorf Cemetery is bigger in Europe.

This Alter Jüdischer Friedhof reminds us of Vienna’s diverse communities. The cemetery has Catholic, Protestant and Jewish sections. The older Jewish cemetery suffered greatly during Kristallnacht. Nazis destroyed it. Yet, about 60,000 graves remain. Names like the Rothschild family and Arthur Schnitzler rest here. A second Jewish cemetery opened in 1917 and is still used.

The Alter Friedhof is part of a larger story. The Zentralfriedhof has Muslim and Orthodox Christian areas too. Europe’s first Buddhist cemetery found a home here. There is even a special area for the Medical University of Vienna. People who donated their bodies to science are interred here.

Authorities wanted to make the Zentralfriedhof attractive. They established honorary graves to draw tourists. Composers like Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert are interred here. They were moved from Währinger Ostfriedhof. Johannes Brahms, Antonio Salieri, Johann Strauss II and Arnold Schoenberg also rest here. A cenotaph honors Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His actual grave is in St. Marx Cemetery.

The Alter Friedhof carries echoes of the past. Gravestones remember family members murdered in the Holocaust. The cemetery faced violence. In 2023, vandals burned a ceremonial hall and sprayed swastikas. This attack was the first since Kristallnacht.

The Zentralfriedhof is more than graves. It is a park, a refuge. Deer, hamsters, squirrels and other animals live here. Locals stroll and jog. The cemetery connects people to nature and history.

As we leave the Alter Friedhof, remember its stories. Remember the people, the controversies, and the resilience. The Zentralfriedhof isn’t just a place for the dead. It is a place for the living to reflect on life and memory.
