Climbing Mount Wondabyne is not for the faint of heart. But the reward is breathtaking. Mount Wondabyne, the tallest peak on the Central Coast, offers unparalleled 360-degree views. Unlike many Sydney mountain views, these are unobstructed, stretching across valleys, mountains, and the Hawkesbury River. At 251 meters tall, Mount Wondabyne sits within Brisbane Water National Park. It’s a hub for different hikes, leading to attractions like Kariong Brook Falls, the Woy Woy infinity pool, Rocky Ponds, and even all the way to Patonga. The iconic view from Mount Wondabyne overlooks the brilliant blue waters of Woy Woy. On a clear day, you can even spot the Sydney CBD. While enjoyable year-round, the best time to hike Mount Wondabyne is during winter or early spring. This is when wildflowers bloom along the trail, adding vibrant color to the otherwise dry terrain. The mostly open fire trail offers little shade, making cooler seasons more comfortable for hiking. The 8km return hike along the Tunnel Fire Trail is the easiest way to reach the summit. The trail is graded as moderate, suitable for most fitness levels. However, some rock scrambling is required for the final ascent to the summit. You’ll eventually encounter a sign for “Mount Wondabyne.” Turn right and follow the trail to a small campground with toilet facilities. From the campground, turn right again. The path becomes rockier here, and the summit trail is not always clearly marked. Look up towards the summit to orient yourself. Pink ribbons sometimes mark the way. The final stretch involves rock scrambling. Make sure you have appropriate hiking shoes. Trust me, the view is worth every bit of effort. Remember that the trail is exposed, so pack adequate sun protection. Be aware of snakes along the trail, and cell phone reception is patchy. Offline maps can be helpful. Long-drop toilets are available only at the Mount Wondabyne Bush Campsite before the summit. Parking is free.
