Grotta 2° del Margaro is part of a fascinating underground complex nestled within the Trieste Karst. It began its life as a simple “blowing fissure,” exhaling air from the depths below. In 1963, curious explorers widened this crack, unveiling the secrets of Grotta 2° del Margaro. The descent into Grotta 2° del Margaro takes us down roughly 30 meters, through a main shaft punctuated by ledges. At the bottom, a debris slope leads to a short gallery. In the middle of this gallery, a small, impassable pothole hints at even deeper mysteries. But Grotta 2° del Margaro holds more than just a single shaft. A passage in the main shaft’s wall leads to two spacious chambers adorned with beautiful formations. The story of Grotta 2° del Margaro is intertwined with its neighbor, the Grotta del Margaro. In 1965, a connection between the two was discovered. This passage explained the strong airflow from the entrance of Grotta 2° del Margaro. The two caves, now united, are known as the “Complesso Grotte I e II del Margaro”.
