Venture into the depths of the earth with me. Today, we explore the Grotta del Muschio. This isn’t just any cave. It’s a hidden world beneath Trieste.

The Grotta del Muschio, also known as cave number 1898 in the regional registry, is a fascinating point of interest. Its main entrance, marked as entrance number 1, beckons us. A small sign with the number 1898 confirms we are in the right place.

First surveyed in 1971, the cave’s entrance is a narrow, vertical shaft. The opening measures only 0.4 by 0.85 meters. It’s like a well. A 13.5-meter deep shaft awaits.

Be careful. There’s a risk of falling. Access is currently free.

The Gruppo Triestino Speleologi, or GTS, tagged the cave in 2014. This was part of a larger tagging campaign.

The Grotta del Muschio is located in the Carso Triestino area, within the municipality of Trieste. You can find it on the Villa Opicina map at coordinates 45.68708727 latitude and 13.81284255 longitude. The cave entrance sits at 315 meters above sea level.

The cave extends 53 meters horizontally and reaches a depth of 17 meters. The bottom lies at 298 meters altitude. The cave features alternating vertical and horizontal passages.

Inside the Grotta del Muschio, the original entrance was a narrow, impassable crack between two rocks. It was widened to allow passage. From there, a shaft descends.

At the base of the shaft, two highly decorated galleries branch out. These are adorned with bright white stalactites. Numerous chimneys disrupt the ceiling’s compactness.

A narrow passage leads from a modest cavern to a small chamber. A narrow, high chimney towers above. Another shaft about 3 meters deep opens at the base of the access shaft.

Explorers estimate the bottom of this shaft to be 3 to 4 meters deep. Giorgio Nicon from the GGCD, Gruppo Grotte Carlo Debeljak, first surveyed the cave on October 11, 1970.

While exploring Grotta del Muschio, remember the words of the past. Bagolini and Biagi studied the cave in the 1980s. They analyzed the role of Carso and Friuli. These areas served as mediators between Neolithic cultures. Montagnari Kokelj, Bernardini, Boscarol and Veluček explored the cave’s prehistoric context. Their studies reveal connections between the Carso region and the Alpine areas.

Grotta del Muschio is more than just a cave. It’s a journey through time. It connects us to the earth and to the people who came before us. As we leave this hidden world, let us carry its secrets. Let’s preserve its beauty for future generations.
