Ever wonder what it was like to manage estates around the Baltic Sea in the 17th century? That’s just one of the many stories held within the walls of Tyresö slott. Welcome to Tyresö Palace a window into Swedish aristocracy and architectural splendor.

Tyresö slott stands about 25 kilometers southeast of central Stockholm. This 17th-century palace offers a serene escape and a glimpse into Sweden’s past. Construction began in the 1620s. It was completed in 1636 by Gabriel Oxenstierna. He was the Lord High Steward. Oxenstierna also built Tyresö Church nearby. He was buried there in 1641.

In 1648 Maria Sofia De la Gardie inherited Tyresö Palace. She was married to Gustaf Gabrielsson Oxenstierna. He was the nephew of Regent Axel Oxenstierna. Maria Sofia managed her estates from Tyresö Palace until 1694. The writer Maria Gustava Gyllenstierna lived at the palace between 1699 and 1737.

During the 1770s Tyresö slott was modernized. The first English garden in Sweden was created here. Garden architect Fredrik Magnus Piper designed it. It blends an English park a Swedish floral meadow and fairy-tale images. The ancient forest served as inspiration. These landscape gardens still exist today.

Marquis Claes Lagergren purchased Tyresö Palace in 1892. He rebuilt it in a national romantic style with architect Isak Gustaf Clason. They used original 17th-century drawings. The Marquis wanted the palace to showcase Swedish history. In 1930 he left Tyresö Palace to the Nordic Museum. Today the Nordic Museum owns the palace.

The main building is approximately 40 meters long. It is nine meters wide and 9.5 meters high. It has three floors and two gabled towers. The detached wings are also about 40 meters long. They have two floors each. Two towers with copper spires crown them.

Tyresö Palace is now a museum. Guided tours are available during the summer. They offer insights into its history and architecture. These tours highlight the palace’s elegance and historical significance. The tours also share stories of the noble families and servants who lived here. Tyresö Palace is easily accessible from Stockholm. You can reach it by public transport or car.

Beyond the palace walls explore the surrounding estate. Trails wind through forests. Enjoy hiking birdwatching or a picnic. The nearby Tyresö Nature Reserve offers diverse flora and fauna. It is a captivating backdrop for exploration. Don’t forget to visit the café next to the palace entrance for a Swedish fika.

Tyresö Palace is more than a landmark. It is a testament to Sweden’s heritage and beauty. Whether you explore the interiors wander through gardens or hike forest trails your visit will leave a lasting impression. Tyresö slott stands as a reminder of the past. It blends architectural grandeur with natural beauty.
