A metal whisper against the sky. That’s the Box Kite Sculpture. Here in western Sydney, at what was once the North Penrith Defence base, this isn’t just art. It’s a tribute. The Box Kite Sculpture commemorates a pivotal moment in history. It represents the very first biplane flight that took off from this very spot in the early 1900s, piloted by W.E. Hart. Now, the Box Kite Sculpture reaches towards the heavens, standing an impressive 12 meters tall. Its wingspan stretches 14 meters across. The sculpture is constructed from stainless steel tubes and curved aluminum plates, all held together by a network of tensioned stainless steel cables. Look closely. Notice how the cables create a sense of balance and tension, mirroring the forces that keep a real kite aloft. The design is a collaboration between artists Milne and Stonehouse, the engineering firm Bligh Tanner, and the fabricators. They worked together to bring this vision to life, capturing the spirit of innovation and flight. This Box Kite Sculpture isn’t just a static object. It’s a dynamic interplay of materials and forces, a reminder of the ingenuity that propelled humanity into the skies.
