Have you ever walked through a village steeped in history? Lam Tei is such a place. Nestled in the Tuen Mun District of Hong Kong’s New Territories Lam Tei whispers stories of generations past. It’s a rural haven a stark contrast to the bustling city nearby. Lam Tei is more than just a location. It’s a living testament to the To Clan. This powerful clan originally hailed from Poyang in Jiangxi province. Some accounts suggest their origins lie in Guangxi. Their journey led them to Ngau Tam Mei before finally settling in Tuen Mun Tai Tsuen. As their numbers grew the To Clan established five fortified villages in Lam Tei. These villages: Nai Wai Tsing Chuen Wai Tuen Tsz Wai Lam Tei Tsuen and Tuen Mun San Tsuen. Each one holds its own unique history. Imagine the strength and resilience it took to build these walled settlements. The To Clan’s ancestral hall in Tuen Tsz Wai played an unexpected role during World War II. The Japanese army briefly used it as a base. They soon moved though. The reason was the clan’s lineage tracing back to To Yuan Ming. Following the war a fire destroyed the interior of the old hall. The To Clan rebuilt a new ancestral hall. They even included a life-size statue of To Yuan Ming their ancestor. Lam Tei isn’t just about history. The area boasts modern features as well. Residential estates like The Sherwood and Botania Villa stand alongside the ancient villages. Lam Tei Quarry and the Lam Tei Reservoir are part of its landscape. The Hung Shui Hang Reservoir adds to the area’s natural beauty. Lam Tei is easily accessible. You can reach it by car using Castle Peak Road. Alternatively use the Light Rail which offers several convenient routes. This quiet area rich in history and culture is more than just a destination. Lam Tei is an experience waiting to be discovered.
