Beneath the watchful gaze of the Chuo Alps sits Myokosan Kozen-ji Temple. A quiet hum of history vibrates through the air here. Can you feel it? Myokosan Kozen-ji Temple, also known as Kozenji, isn’t just a temple. It’s a time capsule, established in 1434 by the 12th Kiso lord Nobumichi. This Rinzai Buddhist temple holds the stories of the Kiso and Yamakura clans within its ancient walls. Myokosan Kozen-ji Temple might appear small at first glance. But don’t let that fool you. Hidden within its modest footprint are four distinct gardens, each a miniature world unto itself. The Syoryu Garden, Shyumisen Garden, Mansho Garden, and Kanuntei Garden. The Kanuntei Garden is particularly special, a dry landscape garden. Here, lines etched in the earth mimic the swirling clouds, and carefully placed rocks stand in for the towering mountains. Imagine strolling through these gardens in the 15th century. Picture the Kiso lords contemplating life amongst these meticulously crafted landscapes. Myokosan Kozen-ji Temple houses Asia’s largest dry rock garden. The vibrant hues of the weeping shidare-sakura trees in spring paint the grounds a vivid pink. And because of its elevation, almost 700 meters up, the cherry blossoms and autumn leaves appear at different times than in other locations. The temple’s main building houses Achala, the King of Eleven Faces, also enshrined within the only 3-story pagoda in the southern part of Nagano. Kozen-ji offers the tranquility and beauty of Kyoto’s temples without the overwhelming crowds. So take a deep breath. Let the serenity of Myokosan Kozen-ji Temple wash over you. And as you leave, carry a piece of its peaceful history with you.
