What kind of name is Mursmäckan? It might sound a little strange, but it holds a fascinating story about Stockholm’s history. Right here, where these charming townhouses now stand, we’re standing in the footprint of a bygone era. Mursmäckan, you see, wasn’t always a neighborhood of modern homes. Its name echoes a forgotten profession, one both grueling and vital to the city’s growth.

Mursmäckan translates to “brick chick” – a rather blunt, even slightly demeaning term for the women who labored on Stockholm’s construction sites. These women, often overlooked by history, were the backbone of the building boom in the late 19th century. Imagine them, these “Mursmäckor,” hauling heavy loads of mortar up rickety scaffolding. They worked tirelessly for twelve hours a day, six days a week, earning a pittance of 14 öre per hour.

Their work was essential, yet incredibly tough. A full “äm bar,” the wooden yoke they used to carry the mortar, weighed around 60 kilos! They often worked in teams, passing the heavy buckets up multiple stories, their hands burning from the lime in the mortar. Can you envision the grit and determination it took to endure such backbreaking work?

Despite their hardship, these women weren’t afraid to fight for their rights. In 1888, the Mursmäckor of Stockholm staged a historic strike, demanding better pay. The city’s first “women’s strike” it was called, a testament to their courage in an era where their voices were rarely heard. They won their demands, though sadly, their victory was short-lived.

Today, Mursmäckan stands as a reminder of these unsung heroines of Stockholm’s past. The name, once a symbol of hardship and low social standing, now graces an award-winning housing development. A fitting tribute, wouldn’t you say, to the strength and resilience of the women who helped build this city?
