Protected since 1988 Ulriksdals naturreservat is a unique place. It’s an unusually well-preserved part of the Stockholmsåsen. This is a long pebble ridge of sand and gravel. It formed at the end of the last ice age. Two pebble hills rise here Kvarnkullen and Järvakullen. Old seawalls cling to their slopes. These walls are remnants of a time when the sea was higher. Waves crashed against the ridge.

At Kvarnkullen’s highest point 43 meters above sea level a windmill once stood. Only an old mill wheel remains today. Dry open grassland surrounds it. Special plants grow here. These plants likely date back to the Iron Age. Pasqueflower and wild thyme are among them. Different forest types cover other parts of the reserve. These include older pine forests spruce forests and hardwood forests.

Two ancient burial grounds lie within Ulriksdals naturreservat. Several visible graves mark them. They probably date from the Early Iron Age 400-1050 AD. Imagine the lives lived here centuries ago. Picture the rituals and beliefs that shaped this place. Ulriksdals naturreservat is not just a nature reserve. It’s a living museum a testament to the passage of time. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine.

The reserve’s 32 hectares hold a wealth of stories. Stories whispered by the wind through the pines. Stories etched into the ancient seawalls. Stories buried beneath the earth. The reserve is more than just rocks and trees. It’s a place of quiet contemplation. It’s a place to connect with the past and appreciate the present.
