Picture the Magen David Sephardic Congregation. Its story begins not in a grand building but in the hearts of immigrants. Sephardic Jews arriving in Washington DC in the 1910s and 20s. Mostly from Turkey and Greece they carried traditions across oceans. By the 1940s Moroccan Jews joined them. Soon others followed from across North Africa and the Middle East. Their shared heritage blossomed. A diverse community united by faith.

The Magen David Sephardic Congregation officially formed in 1966. A board of directors charted their path. Initially a strong Moroccan influence shaped their practices. The congregation grew embracing the wider North African and Middle Eastern traditions. Interestingly they welcomed Ashkenazi visitors and members. Yet their Sephardic identity remained central. A testament to their inclusive spirit.

For years they found temporary homes. Ashkenazi synagogues offered hospitality. Tifereth Israel and Ohr Kodesh were among their hosts. Their search for a permanent home continued. This desire for a space to truly call their own drove them.

Finally in 1984 they purchased a building in Rockville. Their first rabbi Hayyim Kassorla arrived in 1987. Membership surged. They needed more space. This need for growth led to a new chapter.

In 1998 a stunning new synagogue opened in North Bethesda. Its Moorish design reflected their rich heritage. The new building was a testament to their perseverance and unity. A physical representation of their enduring spirit.

Today Magen David Sephardic Congregation stands as a beacon. A center of Sephardic life in the Washington DC area. Daily minyanim weekly Shabbat services annual celebrations. A thriving community they continue to celebrate their traditions. Their journey a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. A living story of immigration resilience and faith. Their story continues.
