Curious about a place that started with just over 1500 students? That place is the Technische Hochschule W\u00fcrzburg-Schweinfurt. It is now known as THWS. This esteemed institution began its journey in 1971. It has since grown into one of Bavaria’s largest universities for applied sciences.
Originally called Fachhochschule W\u00fcrzburg-Schweinfurt, THWS has evolved. It offers around 50 Bachelor’s and Master’s programs. These programs span technology, business, social sciences, and design.
The roots of THWS trace back even further. They go back to 1807. Several predecessor institutions merged to form what we see today. These include the Balthasar-Neumann-Polytechnikum. Also included are the Higher School of Economics and the Werkkunstschule.
In its early days, THWS had two main locations. W\u00fcrzburg focused on architecture, civil engineering, business administration, and graphic design. Schweinfurt specialized in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and industrial engineering. Over time, new programs emerged. Social work, plastics engineering, and computer science were added.
A key moment arrived on February 14, 2003. Hans Zehetmair laid the foundation for a new lecture hall building in Schweinfurt. This 14.5 million Euro project featured a unique circular design. It included an open foyer and state-of-the-art labs.
In 2006, THWS found innovative ways to fund its facilities. It leased the naming rights of its largest lecture hall in W\u00fcrzburg to Aldi-S\u00fcd. The Sparkasse W\u00fcrzburg also became a lecture hall sponsor.
Today, numerous companies sponsor lecture halls at THWS. Bosch Rexroth AG and EDEKA Nordbayern-Sachsen-Th\u00fcringen Stiftung are among them. These partnerships highlight the strong ties between THWS and the business world.
THWS boasts impressive statistics. It has over 9,000 students and around 290 professors. The university actively promotes international experiences. It has a network of about 230 partner universities worldwide.
Student projects thrive at THWS. Mainfranken Racing e. V. is one example. Students design and build race cars for the Formula Student Germany competition.
THWS also emphasizes research. Its activities are concentrated in 15 institutes. These focus on areas like energy technology, human mobility, and digital systems.
The university is involved in cooperative doctoral programs. It partners with over 40 universities worldwide. Since 2024, engineering doctorates can be earned without university cooperation. This is possible through the “Sustainable and Intelligent Systems” center.
In Schweinfurt, the i-Campus is under development. It aims to host 2,000 to 3,000 international students. These students will study STEM fields in both German and English.
Recent additions include a new lecture hall and laboratory building in W\u00fcrzburg. Also added was a lecture hall building in Schweinfurt. These modern facilities enhance the learning environment.
From its humble beginnings, the Hochschule f\u00fcr angewandte Wissenschaften W\u00fcrzburg-Schweinfurt has become a powerhouse of education and innovation. It continues to shape the future of countless students and contribute to advancements in various fields.
