From this vantage point called Vor der Blauen Mauer the view is breathtaking. Imagine standing here in 2020. Before you a newly created viewpoint. It wasn’t always like this. Once a paved storage area it’s now a renatured space. The trees along the border to the former sheep pasture were cleared. This opened the view towards the Albtrauf. A wire fence with overgrown vegetation separated the Schlosspark from the sheep pasture. That fence thankfully was removed. Now your eye wanders freely over the green of the historical sheep pasture. You see the land stretching towards the Swabian Alb on the horizon.

Vor der Blauen Mauer its name a reference to Eduard Mörike’s fairy tale Das Stuttgarter Hutzelmännlein. In the tale the journeyman shoemaker Seppe sees the Alb as a wondrous blue wall. That’s where the name comes from. The milky-blue silhouette of the Swabian Alb inspired the name. This viewpoint Vor der Blauen Mauer gives you a perfect view of that blue wall. The Albtrauf a 200-kilometer-long rock face rises up to 1000 meters. It separates the rugged high plateau from the gentle Alb foreland. The Albtrauf is much more than just a distant view. It’s a paradise for hikers and sightseers. Countless viewpoints and lookouts offer breathtaking 180-degree panoramas. Some are still hidden gems others popular excursion destinations. Even the long-distance hiking trail Albsteig runs along the spectacular Albtrauf edge.
