Seventy years ago a house served as the first worship space. This is Northwood Presbyterian Church. We stand before a place of rich history a community hub. Northwood Presbyterian Church wasn’t always this building. It began in 1958 on the Bob Snure property. The first service was held in a house September 21 1958. Northwood United Presbyterian Church was officially organized later that year. Remarkably from the start they embraced inclusivity. Their first session meeting declared acceptance of all members regardless of race color or ethnic background.
This progressive stance shaped their identity. In 1960 a new chapel was built. Its cornerstone was laid. Services moved from the old house to the new chapel in 1963. Growth continued. An education building was added in just 100 days in 1966. The church became a community center. Scouts and many other groups met within its walls. Even today the Northwood Presbyterian Child Care Center thrives on the property. Northwood’s commitment extended beyond its walls.
Their outreach programs are legendary. During the 1970s a drought in Africa prompted them to buy well-digging equipment for Ethiopia. They also started helping undernourished families both in the US and abroad. They welcomed Vietnamese refugees starting in 1975. A school for children with learning problems was even established in 1976. Northwood Presbyterian Church’s dedication continued into the 1980s. The Pathways School a significant undertaking for children with emotional and learning disabilities was launched in 1982. They established a child care center in 1989.
The 1990s brought a pastoral change but also new ministry initiatives. A partnership with Inwood House a residence for people with disabilities began in 1993. This collaboration continues to this day with events like Christmas carols and Bible studies. The 2000s to 2017 saw ongoing service. This included communion for shut-ins a sandwich ministry and the installation of a Little Free Library. Northwood Presbyterian Church hosted a memorial for gun violence victims in 2015.
Today Northwood Presbyterian Church stands as a testament to enduring faith community engagement and social responsibility. It’s more than just a building it’s a living legacy.
