Forty-seven hundred students. That’s a lot of people. Imagine them all living here at Koleje Strahov.
Koleje Strahov. These aren’t just dormitories. They’re a microcosm of student life in Prague. Built between 1964 and 1965 they replaced old Sokol halls. Architects Stanislav Franc Ludvík Hanf Viktor Formáček Jaroslav Kándl Jan Nováček and J Ezechiáš designed this sprawling complex.
Think about it. This place once housed thousands of students every year. Blocks 2 through 12 overflowing with young people. Their laughter their anxieties their late-night study sessions echoing through these halls. Now some rooms hold two students others more. Even ten students might share a single room at the beginning of a semester. They gradually move to smaller rooms as space opens up.
The Koleje Strahov is more than just rooms. It has its own canteen restaurants shops and sports facilities. There’s even a climbing wall and a parking lot. The campus was also a temporary location for participants in the 15th All-Czech Sokol festival in June 2012.
But life in these halls wasn’t always perfect. In recent years there have been problems with pests. Bed bugs and other insects plagued the buildings. This pest infestation is still ongoing in 2024. This despite many attempts to eliminate them. The older building structures make conditions ideal for such pests. So be prepared for some unexpected encounters.
Today Koleje Strahov is a vibrant hub for students. The Silicon Hill club plays a crucial role. They manage student activities computer labs and self-governance. They also manage the internet access. This is provided via wired connections giving each resident a public IP address. Wi-Fi is also expanding. The Silicon Hill club fosters a sense of community among residents. It also organizes various events and activities.
So next time you see Koleje Strahov remember more than bricks and mortar. It is a living history a testament to student life in Prague and its ever-evolving challenges.
