Picture this Sam A Wan a hidden gem nestled in Hong Kong’s northeastern New Territories. Imagine a tranquil bay a place untouched by the city’s relentless pace. This is Sam A Wan. It’s a place steeped in history a village with a rich Hakka heritage.

Sam A Wan’s story begins long ago. The Tsang clan established this village. They share an ancestor with the Tsang clans of Ma Tseuk Leng Sheung and Lai Chi Wo. In its prime during the 1950s and 60s Sam A Wan thrived. More than 200 residents called it home. But by the late 1960s many men left. They sought opportunities in the UK and the Netherlands. This exodus left the village quieter.

Today Sam A Wan remains accessible only by boat or foot. The Tsang ancestral hall stands as a testament to the past. So does the abandoned three-village school. On weekdays the village sleeps. Weekends however bring the Tsang clan members back. They run a few stores offering food and lodging to the growing number of visitors.

Sam A Wan is part of the Hing Chun Yeuk a group of seven Hakka villages. This alliance includes Kop Tong Lai Chi Wo Mui Tsz Lam Ngau Shi Wu Siu Tan and So Lo Pun. The village is recognized under Hong Kong’s New Territories Small House Policy. While it’s changed the spirit of Sam A Wan remains. It’s a peaceful bay a connection to Hong Kong’s fascinating past.
