Omodaru no Mikami. Does that name spark curiosity? At Dairokuten-gū you can explore the story behind it. This place is more than just a shrine. It is a testament to Tokyo’s rich religious history.

Dairokuten-gū is dedicated to Omodaru no Mikami. This deity is associated with the sixth heaven in Buddhist cosmology. The name Dairokuten itself reflects this connection. It translates to Sixth Heaven.

Originally Dairokuten-gū was linked to Dairokuten Maō. This deity was the Sixth Heaven Demon King. During the Meiji period a separation of Shinto and Buddhist practices occurred. Many shrines dedicated to Dairokuten changed their main deity. Dairokuten-gū followed this trend. It shifted its focus to Omodaru and Ayakashikone. These are the sixth and seventh generations of kami in Shinto mythology.

Omodaru is believed to be the male half. Ayakashikone is thought to be the female half. Together they represent a single being. Omodaru’s name means face and leg. This indicates a being without imperfection. Every part is furnished complete. Some theories suggest the names mean the face of the earth. Other interpretations say the land was perfect and complete.

Interestingly Oda Nobunaga took on the name of Dairokuten Maō. He worshiped at a Dairokuten Shrine. This adds a layer of historical intrigue to the deity. Dairokuten is also linked to protection against smallpox. This shows the deity’s role in public health.

Today Dairokuten-gū offers blessings. These include good relationships love fulfillment and child rearing. The shrine follows a traditional worship style. This involves two bows two claps and one final bow.

Visiting Dairokuten-gū offers a glimpse into Japan’s syncretic religious past. It is where Shinto and Buddhist beliefs intertwine. The shrine stands as a reminder of Tokyo’s spiritual depth. Take a moment to appreciate the blend of history faith and culture. It is an experience that will enrich your understanding of Japan.
