“A humble trailer, can you believe it?” I ask, gesturing towards the magnificent Nanaksar Gurdwara in Toronto. “That’s how this grand place of worship began its journey.” The Nanaksar Gurdwara stands as a testament to the devotion and perseverance of the Sikh community in the Greater Toronto Area. It’s not just a building; it’s a living story of faith, migration, and community spirit. This Gurdwara, known as Nanaksar Toronto, has a fascinating history. It all began in 1980 when Sant Baba Gurdev Singh Jee first visited Canada. The Toronto Sangat, inspired by his teachings, requested a Nanaksar Gurdwara. While the first Canadian Nanaksar Gurdwara was built in Winnipeg in 1982, the Toronto community’s dream began to materialize in 1989 with the purchase of land in Caledon East. Regular paths of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee started then. A Ragi Jatha, a group of Sikh musicians, was sent from India in 1992 to begin regular Katha and Kirtan. The Nanaksar Gurdwara’s current location was acquired in 1992. Baba Jee himself turned the soil on May 9, 1992, to initiate the construction. Interestingly, Katha and Kirtan services commenced right away in a trailer on the site. Construction progressed rapidly. Regular services began in May 1993 with the start of Sri Akhand Path of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee. The official inauguration followed later that month. Located between Brampton and Mississauga, the Nanaksar Gurdwara attracts a large Sangat, especially for morning and evening services. The cream stone exterior and green roof make it a landmark in the area. Pooranmashi, the full moon, is a special time at the Gurdwara, drawing devotees from across Ontario, Quebec, and even the US. The Nanaksar Gurdwara isn’t just a place of worship; it’s a vibrant center of the Sikh community in the Toronto area.
