Right here stands J O Wilson Recreation Center. It is more than just a building. It is a place of transformation and growth for the community.
J O Wilson is currently undergoing a massive renovation. The $91 million project started in the 2024-2025 school year. The goal is to modernize the facilities and create a net-zero energy school.
During construction, the J O Wilson community has temporarily relocated. They are at a DCPS swing space less than two miles away. The address is 810 26th Street NE. The community is expected to return to the renovated school for the 2026-2027 school year.
The modernization includes demolishing the octagon part of the school. The original building on K Street will be gutted and renovated. A new addition will be constructed, featuring a new gymnasium and performance space. J O Wilson will become fully ADA accessible. There will be new playgrounds and common spaces. State-of-the-art classrooms and amenities will be added throughout the campus.
Transportation is provided for students during the renovation. DCPS runs buses daily from J O Wilson to the swing site. Buses are available for morning drop-off, afternoon dismissal, and aftercare. Staff members are present to help students board and exit the buses.
The swing space includes dedicated playgrounds for different age groups. There is dedicated parking for teachers. Separate drop-off and pick-up zones are in place for J O students. The swing space consists of modular buildings connected by a covered boardwalk. Each classroom has windows. PreK classrooms have en suite bathrooms. A separate structure houses the cafeteria and gym.
J O Wilson offers extensive before and after-school programs. These programs serve over 300 students. They partner with external organizations like Polite Piggy’s, DCPS Out of School Time, and Kid Power. These partnerships ensure a variety of programming options for families.
Polite Piggy’s provides after-school programming for Pre-K3, Pre-K4, and Kindergarten students. The DCPS after-school program supports students in 1st and 2nd grade. Kid Power supports students in grades 3rd-5th.
The new modernized design of J O Wilson will improve physical education and dining services. These activities can occur simultaneously during the school day. Discovery commons spaces, small group rooms, and resource rooms will be integrated into the design. These spaces will accommodate special projects, collaborative work, and individual instruction.
J O Wilson Elementary School aims to meet ADA requirements through this modernization. Learning, instruction, and support technology will be brought to cutting-edge standards. The project is designed to incorporate LEED for Schools Gold principles. J O Wilson will become a Net Zero energy building.
J O Wilson also has one of the largest preschool programs in the district. There are three PreK-3 classes, three PreK-4 classes, and one mixed-age class. An Early Learning Supports Classroom is dedicated to special education.
The preschool program focuses on exploration and confidence. Teachers and parents partner to create a supportive classroom community. This community fosters independence and promotes a lifelong love of learning.
Creative Curriculum is used in the preschool program. Students engage in hands-on studies. Examples include Trees, Reduce Reuse Recycle, and Clothing. Students have regular weekly specials. These cover Physical Education, Music, Art, Spanish, and Performing Arts.
