Isn’t it intriguing how a neighborhood can hold so much history? We are now standing in Chillum Heights. This neighborhood in Washington, D.C. has a story that stretches back over a century.
Chillum Heights has been around since 1896. The Chillum Heights Citizens Association was already active then. Imagine the discussions, the debates, and the decisions made by those early residents. They shaped the community we see today.
In 1940, The Washington Post reported on the Chillum Heights Group. They were keeping “an eagle eye on zoning status”. This shows a long tradition of community involvement in Chillum Heights. Residents cared about their neighborhood’s development then, just as they do now.
Let’s talk about location. Chillum Heights is near many other notable places. Capitol Hill is about 6.4 km away. Capitol Riverfront is a bit further at 8.2 km. The Palisades are 10 km away. Even closer are Lamond-Riggs at 1 km, and North Michigan Park, Petworth and Manor Park, all within 2 km.
There is also the neighboring Chillum in Maryland just 2.3 km away. Don’t confuse Chillum Heights in D.C. with Chillum in Maryland. They are distinct places with their own stories.
Chillum in Maryland got its name from “Chillum Castle Manor”. William Dudley Digges established this land patent in 1763. It was named after Chilham Castle. That was the old home of Sir Dudley Digges, an ancestor of William. The manor included land in what is now D.C. and Prince George’s County.
The manor house for the Henrietta Maria parcel was named Green Hill. Pierre L’Enfant, the designer of Washington, D.C., died there in destitution in 1825. He was later re-interred at Arlington National Cemetery. George Washington Riggs later purchased the Green Hill plantation and built the current Green Hill historic home in 1868.
Back in Chillum Heights, things remained rural until the 1930s. This was because there was no public transportation. But that changed. Developers started subdividing the area near the D.C. border. They promoted the area’s access to the city and its utilities.
The first developments were Chillum Gardens and Oakdale Terrace. The developers sold lots but left construction to the owners. This meant the communities developed slowly. In contrast, Green Meadows and Brookdale Manor were built by developers. They were completed by 1942.
Other communities followed. These include Chillumgate in 1946 and Michigan Hills Park in the 1940s. Subdivisions were built along Riggs Road, Sargent Road, and Sligo Creek Park in the 1950s. These include Sargent Knolls, Bel Air Estates, Parkland, and Carrington.
Chillum Heights Apartments were built in 1949. These are three-story brick buildings with over 1,100 units. Larger apartment complexes were built in the 1960s. This shows how the neighborhood grew and changed over time.
Chillum Heights offers a glimpse into the past. It shows us how communities evolve. It also underlines the importance of local engagement. The legacy of the Chillum Heights Citizens Association lives on. It reminds us that every neighborhood has a unique and valuable story to tell.
