Amidst the serene beauty of Skogskyrkogården Cemetery lies a hidden gem, Almhöjden. Almhöjden, also known as Meditationslunden, is a place of quiet contemplation. It offers solace and reflection to all who visit. As you ascend the gently sloping stairs of Almhöjden, notice how the steps become shallower. This thoughtful design by Sigurd Lewerentz eases your journey. It makes reaching the summit less strenuous, both physically and metaphorically. Almhöjden is more than just a hill. It is a testament to the vision of two brilliant architects, Asplund and Lewerentz. Their competition entry in 1915 did not initially include Almhöjden. However, it showcased their masterful understanding of landscape design. This impressed the jury, which included prominent figures like Ragnar Östberg and Gustaf Wickman. The jury praised their use of the existing gravel pits. They called it natural, simple, and ingenious. The final form of Almhöjden took shape over two decades. It wasn’t until the 1940 inauguration of the Woodland Crematorium that Almhöjden, with its granite cross and surrounding landscape, was complete. Almhöjden sits atop a natural rise within the cemetery. It is enclosed by a low granite wall, a subtle boundary that enhances its sense of peace. Twelve elm trees stand sentinel within this space. Their branches reach towards the sky, creating a natural canopy overhead. This walled square is about 20 by 20 meters. It holds the last vestiges of a grand ceremonial area that was once planned around Tallum’s main chapel. Almhöjden, with its understated elegance, invites you to pause and reflect. It is a place where the weight of the world seems to lift. The gentle rustle of elm leaves and the distant birdsong create a soothing symphony. It’s a reminder of the cyclical nature of life and the enduring power of nature. Almhöjden’s design draws inspiration from the biblical landscapes described by Asplund, and even echoes ancient landscapes like Pompeii’s “Via Sepulchra.” Almhöjden stands as a unique feature within Skogskyrkogården. It isn’t to be mistaken with the cemetery’s Remembrance Grove, located further north. Almhöjden, completed around 1935, showcases the seamless blend of nature and design. As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the serenity and the thoughtful details that make this place so special within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Skogskyrkogården.
