Seeking breathtaking views? Fortress Rock Lookout awaits. Fortress Rock Lookout isn’t just a spot on the map. It’s a rock platform perched dramatically on a cliff edge, offering spectacular views of the Grose Valley. Fortress Rock Lookout sits at the end of a spur jutting off Fortress Ridge in the heart of the Blue Mountains. Imagine standing between two vertical cliff faces. From this unique vantage point, you can gaze upon the stunning vista of Govetts Creek winding through the valley below. Fortress Rock Lookout’s sister lookout, Fortress Ridge Lookout, offers a similar panorama. However, reaching it requires a significantly longer trek. A well-maintained fire trail leads almost to the edge of Fortress Ridge. From there, a narrow bushwalking track descends the last few hundred meters to Fortress Rock Lookout. The walk to Fortress Rock Lookout is a relatively easy 3km round trip. For the more adventurous, the walk can be extended to include visits to Fortress Creek Falls or the intriguing Dr. Dark’s Cave. Reaching Fortress Rock Lookout starts with a drive along Mount Hay Road. This road, located about 8.7km from the Great Western Highway at Leura, is mostly unsealed. It’s typically accessible by any vehicle. However, after heavy rain, a 4WD or SUV is recommended. Look for a small parking area about 1.3km before the Lockleys Pylon trailhead. Keep in mind that signage is limited, and the parking area can fill up, especially on weekends. Overflow parking is available on the road shoulder. The drive from Katoomba is approximately 25 minutes, while the journey from Sydney takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. So, are you ready to witness the majestic beauty of the Grose Valley from Fortress Rock Lookout?
