How can a building embody a philosophy? The Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study does just that. It stands before you as a testament to decades of dedication to understanding and nurturing young minds.

Established in 1925 the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study at the University of Toronto was a pioneer. It was the university’s first multidisciplinary institute. Its mission is threefold. It integrates graduate teacher education, the R.G.N Laidlaw Research Centre, and the JICS Laboratory School. The Laboratory School serves 200 students from nursery to grade 6.

Imagine the bustling activity within these walls. A new 27000 square foot addition unites two old houses. This creates a single barrier free facility. Before the addition, the institute occupied two separate houses. The differing floor levels posed a design challenge. Gentle ramps now seamlessly connect the spaces.

Consider the thoughtful design. The building includes a multipurpose gymnasium and auditorium. It features retractable seating. New classrooms and amenity spaces enhance the Laboratory School. Study and lecture spaces support the graduate program. Advanced teaching technology is integrated into every classroom.

The Spadina Road entrance welcomes visitors through a landscaped forecourt. Above the entry a dramatic façade projects from the second floor. It is the Lab School lunch and drama room. Children can inhabit a deep bay window within this space. The entry lobby leads to a wide hall. A linear garden is visible on one side. On the other side, you can look down into the gymnasium and auditorium. Colourful floor patterns define the circulation. A palette of oak millwork adds warmth.

In 2010, the institute received its current name. It was named in honour of Dr. Eric Jackman. He is a clinical psychologist and alumnus of the Laboratory School. His financial gift was the largest donation to early childhood education in Canadian history.

The Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study connects research practice and community. The institute’s recent expansion enhances these connections. Faculty are affiliated with the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development at OISE. The Laboratory School is an award winning site for learning about child development. The graduate teacher education program is exemplary. Students delve deeply into research and complete practicums. These take place in local school boards and the Laboratory School.

The R.G.N. Laidlaw Research Centre is another key component. It is a cohort based program. It is designed for professionals in education and related fields. The centre enriches their practice and advances their careers.

Natural Curiosity and The Robertson Program are housed at JICS. These support educators across Ontario and Canada. Natural Curiosity is an environmental and land based inquiry program. It links environmental and Indigenous education. The Robertson Program promotes inquiry based teaching models for math and science.

The Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study is more than just a building. It is a vibrant community. It fosters research, learning, and a commitment to children’s education and well being. As you stand here, consider the legacy of innovation and care that defines this remarkable institution.
