Nestled beside Würzburg, the market town of Höchberg whispers tales of ancient settlements and intriguing events. Höchberg first appeared in records in 748. Bishop Burkard gifted the settlement, then known as “hugbur,” to the Andreas Monastery in Würzburg. Imagine Höchberg centuries later, in 1749. The Hexenbruch, a quarry where locals extracted Muschelkalk for generations, became the site of a grim event. It was here that Maria Renata Singer von Mossau, the last alleged witch in Franconia, met her tragic end. Her body was burned near the Zeller Waldspitze after being beheaded. The name “Hexenbruch” (Witches’ Quarry) didn’t appear until the 19th century, a chilling reminder of this dark chapter in Höchberg’s history. Today, Höchberg thrives as a modern community of nearly 10,000 residents. It boasts a bustling town center filled with cafes, boutiques, and essential services. The “Hexenbruch” area, developed in the 1970s, remains a popular residential area. Families are drawn to the schools and Mainland Leisure Center located nearby. Höchberg also has a rich religious history. It’s home to the Catholic Parish and Pilgrimage Church of Mariä Geburt, the Catholic Parish of St. Norbert, and the Protestant Church of St. Matthew. Interestingly, the St. Matthew’s Church building has a poignant past. It originally served as Höchberg’s synagogue until its destruction during the Kristallnacht pogrom in 1938. The building was later acquired by the Protestant community in 1951, a symbol of resilience and transformation. Höchberg even has its own quirky mascot: a raven named “Krack.” This symbolizes the local dialect term for Höchberg residents, “Höchberger Krack’n.” From a small settlement gifted to a monastery to a vibrant modern town, Höchberg offers a captivating blend of history and contemporary life, making it a truly unique destination.
