The original library at Cheung Wah Estate was small. This new Fanling Public Library however is a significant upgrade. It boasts an impressive 2200 square meters. That’s almost eleven times larger than its predecessor.
Imagine the transformation. The old library was cozy. This one is expansive. It’s a district library offering enhanced services. Residents of Fanling now have a convenient location to pursue self-learning. The library’s design is thoughtful. The use of ceiling light troughs enhances illumination. Green plants contribute to a calming environment. The newspaper and periodical room features large glass windows. Comfortable wooden tables with tilted surfaces promote relaxed reading.
Beyond the books. The Fanling Public Library is equipped with a multimedia library. There is a computer and information center. An extension activities room is also available. A students’ study room provides a quiet space for focused work. Even a coffee corner exists. Readers can take a break and recharge.
The collection is extensive. Initially the library housed 120000 books. These include both Chinese and English titles. Around 7000 compact discs CD-ROMs and audio cassettes were also available. There were also 4400 quick reference books. The library’s commitment to information access goes further. More than 150 local and overseas newspapers and periodicals are offered. A substantial collection of audio cassettes compact discs video cassettes video discs video compact discs and CD-ROMs cater to diverse interests.
The Fanling Public Library truly embraces technology. Thirty computer terminals provide access to multimedia resources the internet and CD-ROM search facilities. Eleven online public access catalogue terminals are available for searching the vast collection. The library actively promotes reading. They organize extension activities. These range from children’s hours to interest clubs reading programs and book displays. The library is open from 9 am to 8 pm Mondays to Wednesdays and Fridays. Saturday closing time is 7 pm. Sundays and public holidays it closes at 5 pm. Thursdays are closed. The students’ study room however extends its hours to 10 pm Mondays to Wednesdays and Fridays.
