Did you know Riverdale Baptist Church started as a small mission? It grew from humble beginnings to impact countless lives. In 1926, the First Baptist Church of Hyattsville started a mission outreach. This became known as the First Baptist Church of Riverdale.

Initially, church services for Riverdale Baptist Church were in homes. In 1928, they constructed their first sanctuary. This little white sanctuary could seat 150 people. It still stands today on Riverdale Road. It is just north of the Baltimore Washington Parkway.

Riverdale Baptist Church expanded its facilities in 1946 and 1962. By 1972, the church needed two services each Sunday morning. This accommodated the growing membership. In 1972, the church was recognized as one of America’s Fastest Growing Churches. Elmer Towns mentioned it in his book.

In 1971, Riverdale Baptist School was founded. The school began with 188 students. These students were in kindergarten through sixth grade. They rented facilities from a local Catholic school. The school quickly grew.

By 1974, Riverdale Baptist Church purchased 156 acres on Largo Road in Upper Marlboro MD. They planned to build a new sanctuary and educational facilities. The educational wing was built first in 1975. It had 70000 square feet. In 1978, the 2300-seat sanctuary was constructed.

Riverdale Baptist School now has over 1000 students. These students are in grades K3-12. Over the years, the school added many facilities. These include a gymnasium and baseball diamonds. They also added a football, soccer, and track sports complex.

Riverdale Baptist Church is known for its friendly congregation. It offers engaging and spiritually uplifting services. The church emphasizes gospel preaching. It is recognized as one of the best churches in the DC area. The Christmas shows highlight the true meaning of the season. They are fun for all ages. Many find spiritual nourishment and a sense of home here at Riverdale Baptist Church. The church community continues to thrive and welcomes all.
