Odessa Shannon made history becoming the first elected black woman to serve on the Montgomery County School Board in 1982. Paul L Vance became the county’s first black superintendent in 1991 leading the district through a period of substantial growth.
The 21st century saw its own challenges. In 2014 the school calendar was amended to remove references to Christian and Jewish holidays a move prompted by a campaign for Muslim holiday recognition. More recently in 2024 Monifa McKnight the first Black woman superintendent resigned.
