A grand dame of UCT’s history Fuller Hall stands proudly. Its very stones whisper stories of pioneering women. Maria Emmeline Barnard Fuller a name synonymous with this residence. She wasn’t just a wife or a socialite. She was a trailblazer.
Fuller Hall opened in 1928. It wasn’t named Fuller Hall until 1950 though. This was a fitting tribute to a woman who fought tirelessly for women’s rights. She championed equality in education. She pushed for equal pay for women lecturers at UCT. This made UCT unique in South Africa at the time.
Imagine a young Maria Emmeline Buchanan. One of the first women to enroll at the South African College in 1886. She faced obstacles. She persevered. She studied chemistry despite restrictions. It wasn’t until the following year women were admitted to all classes. Her determination paved the way for countless others.
In 1893 she married Dr Edward Barnard Fuller. He became chairman of the University Council. But Maria Emmeline wasn’t content playing a supporting role. She became instrumental in establishing Arthur’s Seat a women’s residence. She served on its house committee for five years.
After the South African College became UCT in 1918 she was a member of the Provisional Committee. She oversaw the development of the Groote Schuur campus. In the same year she was one of only two women on the University Council. Her dedication extended beyond UCT.
She was a founding member and first president of the National Council of Women. She dedicated her life to promoting women’s education and their right to vote. For over 40 years of public service she was awarded the George V Silver Jubilee Medal in 1935.
Fuller Hall isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of perseverance. A testament to the struggles and triumphs of women. It’s a living legacy to Maria Emmeline Barnard Fuller a woman who dared to dream and made her dreams a reality. A woman who profoundly shaped UCT’s history. Her bust stands proudly on Fuller Hall’s facade a permanent reminder of her incredible contributions. She died in 1957. Her spirit lives on in the walls of Fuller Hall. A true inspiration to generations of women.
