“Documents for super legalization?” someone asks hurrying up to the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates. This embassy stands as a vital link between the Czech Republic and the UAE. It fosters diplomatic relations and supports UAE nationals abroad.
The Embassy of the United Arab Emirates is located at Sibiřské náměstí 730/1. Its doors are open from 9 AM to 4 PM except on Saturdays and Sundays.
Ibtisam Saleh Al Khayyal serves as the Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. She assumed this role in July 2020. Before that, she was the Head of Economic and Media Affairs at the embassy since 2016. Al Khayyal’s career in diplomatic service began in 2008. She has held positions in Ottawa, Canada.
The UAE’s history is deeply connected to trade and Islam. Islam arrived in the region around AD 630. The Emirates’ location between Europe and the Far East attracted merchants. These merchants came from India and China. Europeans also valued the location. The Portuguese, Dutch, and British sought influence here.
In the 19th century, the British signed agreements with individual Emirates. This created an area known as “The Trucial States.” The Emirates agreed not to cede territory. They also agreed to refrain from foreign engagement without British consent. In return, the British promised coastal protection.
The pearling industry once thrived here. It provided income to the Gulf people. Many inhabitants were semi-nomadic. They would pearl in the summer. They would tend date gardens in the winter. The economic depression and the invention of cultured pearls damaged this industry.
In the early 1930s, oil companies began geological surveys. By 1962, Abu Dhabi exported its first crude oil cargo. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan became the Ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966. Oil revenues led to infrastructure development. This included schools, housing, hospitals, and roads.
Sheikh Zayed increased contributions to the Trucial States Development Fund. Dubai, under Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, joined the shipping industry. In 1969, Dubai began exporting oil. Sheikh Rashid improved the quality of life for his people.
In 1968, the British announced their withdrawal from the Arabian Gulf. Sheikh Zayed called for a federation. This federation would include the seven Trucial States, Qatar, and Bahrain.
On December 2, 1971, six Emirates formed the United Arab Emirates. Ra’s al-Khaimah joined the following year. Since then, the seven Emirates have created a distinct national identity. The UAE’s system blends tradition with modern administration.
