Gazing across the Potomac River from Algonkian Regional Park, can you picture smokestacks dominating the landscape? Algonkian Regional Park, a sprawling 838-acre haven, almost met a different fate. This tranquil escape in Sterling, Virginia, was nearly the site of a coal-burning power plant. In the 1950s, the County Board of Supervisors envisioned this very spot as a hub for energy production. They partnered with PEPCO, the power company, who promised prosperity and increased land value. The W&OD railroad, now the popular NOVA Parks trail, was acquired by the C&O railroad to transport coal to the proposed plant. However, Maryland had other plans. They successfully lobbied for the power plant to be built on their side of the Potomac. Virginia, in turn, received a different kind of power – the power of nature and recreation. PEPCO, after abandoning the power plant idea, developed a golf course and conference center for their employees on the Algonkian land. By the 1970s, they sought to divest themselves of the property. Loudoun County seized the opportunity. In exchange for joining NOVA Parks (then the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority), they acquired almost 1,000 acres along the Potomac. Algonkian Regional Park was born. Today, Algonkian Regional Park offers a wealth of activities. You can rent a picnic shelter or a cottage along the Potomac River. Hike along paved or natural trails. Tee off at the 18-hole golf course. Or take the kids to Volcano Island Waterpark for a splash of summer fun. The park’s journey from a potential industrial site to a beloved recreational area is a testament to the twists and turns of fate. Algonkian Regional Park stands as a vibrant reminder of what could have been, and a celebration of what is.
