Nestled along the Kamakura Road and the Kotta River sits the Tama Catholic Church. Notice the striking cross, the serene chapel, and the prominent sign that announces “Catholic Tama Church”. This area, brimming with seasonal beauty, offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city. Cherry trees line the river, gingko trees grace the road, and lush greenery surrounds the church. The Tama Catholic Church’s story begins in 1972, not with a building, but with a community. Father Francis Xavier Hideo Teranishi, the first chaplain, described the early church as a gathering of over one hundred parishioners and one priest, connected by shared faith and regular meetings. They held masses in homes, a testament to their devotion. As the community grew, they moved to a small apartment, then a larger condominium, before finally building a temporary church at the present location in 1994. The current Tama Catholic Church, dedicated in 2000 during the Great Holy Year, embodies a spirit of welcome and outreach. The sixth chaplain, Father Peter Masahide Haresaku, prioritized evangelization. He rallied the community around the slogan, “Our Church will aim at the living church in the dry desert.” The church offers solace to those in need through its reception team, orientation group, and visitation group for the sick. Inside, you’ll find a wooden image of the Risen Christ, an icon of Our Lady of the Sign, and stained glass by Father Albert Carpentier. To the left of the altar, you’ll find a unique relic: the sacred remains of the beard of St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe, the church’s patron saint. Today, the Tama Catholic Church continues to foster community. After Sunday Mass, parishioners gather for refreshments and conversation. The church’s tea service on the terrace provides a peaceful respite. Tama Catholic Church collaborates with Chofu Church and Fuchu Church in the Tama Higashi Regional Mission Group, sharing common prayers, joint masses, friendship parties, and even a youth summer camp. Whether you seek spiritual guidance, a moment of reflection, or simply a warm welcome, the Tama Catholic Church offers a haven. Its journey from a small gathering to a vibrant community reflects the enduring power of faith.
