Nestled on Ma Wan Island, the Fong Yuen Study Hall whispers tales of bygone eras. It stands as a testament to the island’s rich history and cultural heritage. Originally built in the 1920s, the Fong Yuen Study Hall wasn’t always known by this name. It began as the Chan Study Hall, erected by the Chan clan of Tin Liu even before the 20th century dawned. The building we see today, however, reflects a blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles. This unique fusion emerged during its reconstruction in the 1920s and 1930s, when it was also given its current name. “Fong Yuen” beautifully translates to “a nice place for study,” a fitting moniker for this historic educational institution. During the tumultuous years of the Japanese Occupation, the Fong Yuen Study Hall’s purpose shifted dramatically. It served as a temporary station for Japanese troops before they moved on to other locations. The hall’s educational function was temporarily suspended, only to be revived after the war ended. This resilient structure persevered, playing a vital role in the island’s community. Fong Yuen Study Hall holds the distinction of being the first and, for a time, the only primary school on Ma Wan Island. It earned the affectionate nickname “Senior Fong Yuen.” Later, in 1956, a new single-story schoolhouse was built nearby, known as the Ma Wan Public Fong Yuen School or “Junior Fong Yuen.” Today, this newer structure is preserved within Ma Wan Park, serving as a gallery. The original Fong Yuen Study Hall stands as the sole surviving pre-war school on the island, a poignant reminder of Ma Wan’s educational journey through time. Its architecture tells a story of its own. The rectangular two-story building boasts granite slope walls at its sides and rear, while a Chinese-style threshold, also crafted from granite, graces the entrance. Intricate carvings adorn the structure, including depictions of “Po-phase flowers,” the Chinese character for longevity (“Shou”), and symbolic “reborn knots.” The Western-style parapet walls on the rooftop, embellished with traditional Chinese auspicious patterns, further showcase the building’s unique blend of architectural influences. The Fong Yuen Study Hall is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living embodiment of Ma Wan’s history, having witnessed the island’s transformation through the decades.
