Behold Pomona a bronze goddess. She stands before you. A timeless figure. Her creator Marino Marini envisioned her as Mother Nature. A symbol of serene abundance. He crafted her between 1935 and 1950. This particular Pomona dates to 1941. Two other replicas exist. One graces the Musee Royaux des Beaux Arts in Brussels.

Marini’s Pomona is a powerful image. Notice the absence of arms and head. The subtle curve of her body. Her weight rests on one leg. The other extends slightly. It’s a pose brimming with quiet strength. The artist’s initials MM are subtly inscribed at the base. The foundry mark Fonderia d’arte De Andreis Milano adds another layer of history.

Marini’s vision wasn’t simply aesthetic. He described his Pomonas as inhabiting a “bright and sunny world of poetry humanity abundance and great sensuality”. He saw them as representing a hopeful season. A contrast to the tragic era of war. He explored femininity’s most “remote inescapable and mysterious forms”. He saw it as a primal essence. One of static immovability and unconscious fertility.

This Pomona wasn’t always here in Stockholm. It was originally gifted by the artist to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence in 1987. It was displayed in the San Pier Scheraggio. Now you see her here. A testament to the enduring power of art to transcend boundaries. A symbol of nature’s enduring fertility. A beautiful and enduring bronze form. A timeless goddess. A piece of history.
