St. Joseph’s Catholic Church has a rich history. German immigrants founded it. They sought a place to worship and connect. The architect of St. Joseph’s was from Cologne, Germany. He modeled its design after the Cologne Cathedral. The church was built with brown stone from Hershey, Pennsylvania. The construction cost $75,000.
Originally, masses were said in Latin. Homilies were delivered in German. Later, Italian stonemasons joined the congregation. These stonemasons were working on the Capitol’s expansion. This led to services in other languages.
St. Joseph’s proximity to important buildings is unique. It is near the Supreme Court and the Capitol. This location has drawn many notable figures. Members of Congress, congressional staffers, and Supreme Court justices attend daily Mass here.
It is known as the Senate church. Its counterpart, St. Peter’s, is the House church. Senators John E. Kenna, Robert F. Kennedy, and Ted Kennedy all attended St. Joseph’s. Justice Antonin Scalia also worshipped here.
In 2017, St. Joseph’s began a new tradition. It held an annual “Gold Mass” for congressional staffers. This special Mass recognizes their important work.
Father William Gurnee is the current pastor. He is the seventeenth pastor in the church’s history. The church is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. The church’s mission is to be a cornerstone of the neighborhood. It welcomes everyone in a transient city.
St. Joseph’s has undergone renovations. An extensive restoration began in 2002. These efforts ensure its beauty remains for future generations.
