1. zastavení marks a significant point. It is part of Prague’s rich tapestry. The city has been called “The Golden City”. It is also known as “The City of a Hundred Towers”. “The Heart of Europe” are other names.

Prague is the capital. It is the most important city in Bohemia. Its central European location has made it a hub. It has been a political cultural and economic center since its foundation.

The land where Prague stands was first inhabited by the Boii. They were a Gallic tribe. Bohemia is named after them. After the Roman Empire collapsed Germanic tribes settled here. Slavic tribes arrived in the sixth century. By the ninth century it was called Prague.

Merchants and craftsmen settled around Prague Castle. Prince Bořivoj I built it. He unified the Czech tribes in Bohemia in the tenth century.

In 950, the area became part of the Holy Roman Empire. It was an autonomous empire. In 1061, Prague became the seat of the dukes of Bohemia. King Wenceslas I founded the Old Town in Prague.

King Ottokar II founded Malá Strana in 1257. It was for the German people. Emperor Charles IV reigned from 1346 to 1378. Prague flourished. He designed the New Town for the Czech people. He also built the Charles Bridge.

The Hussite Wars took place from 1419 to 1434. They were between Roman Catholic Monarchs and Jan Hus’s followers. Hus was a Bohemian Christian reformer. He was burned at the stake for his radical ideas.

Ferdinand I became King of Bohemia in 1526. Until 1918 Prague’s history was tied to Austria and the House of Hapsburg. The Second Defenestration of Prague led to the Thirty Years’ War. It was a conflict between Protestant and Catholic states. Ferdinand II was dethroned.

In 1784, Hradčany, Malá Strana, Nové Město and Staré Město became one city. The Industrial Revolution helped Prague grow. Rich merchants and European nobles built palaces mansions churches and green spaces. Czech nationalism grew.

The revolution of 1848 touched Prague. Czechs revolted for autonomy. The uprisings were suppressed.

After World War I Czechoslovakia was created in 1918. Prague became the capital. In 1939, Nazi troops invaded Prague. It became a German protectorate. After World War II Prague was under Soviet control. It was under a Communist regime.

In 1968, Alexander Dubček led “Socialism with a face”. It aimed to democratize the country. This was the Prague Spring. The Soviet Union invaded.

On November 17 1989 students demonstrated against the Communist Party. This was the Velvet Revolution. Communist rule ended. In 1993, Czechoslovakia split. Prague became the capital of the Czech Republic.
