Overlooking the scenic Monteliusvägen, Ivar Los park is a beloved Stockholm gem. It’s a hidden retreat, a perfect spot for picnics and breathtaking views. Ivar Los park rests along the northern shores of Södermalm, on Mariaberget. It offers a unique vantage point of the city. Ivar Lo-Johansson, a renowned Swedish author, made his home across the street from Ivar Los park at Bastugatan 21. He lived there from 1934 until his death in 1990. His presence graces the park in the form of a bronze bust. This bust, created by Nils Möllerberg in 1949, was placed in the park in 1991. The park itself has a unique history. Two 18th-century houses once stood on the site. These were demolished in the 1930s, making way for a playground called Mariatäppan. In 1990, Mariatäppan was renamed Ivar Los park to honor the writer. The ceremony was led by former Finance Minister Gunnar Sträng, who shared Lo-Johansson’s working-class background. Today, Ivar Los park retains its playful spirit with a playground. A grand, old ash tree stands sentinel at the Bastugatan entrance. In winter, the southern slope transforms into a popular sledding hill. The park’s most magical feature is the panoramic view. Visitors can marvel at Riddarfjärden, Norr Mälarstrand, Kungsholmen, and Gamla stan. A themed playground, designed by artist Tor Svae, was added in 2017. It depicts an idyllic image of Swedish country life. This adds to the park’s charm and offers a whimsical touch.
