This location is closely tied to the Schützenberger family. They were prominent figures in the city. The Schützenberger name is well-known to locals. For almost three centuries, the family left its mark on Alsace. The family’s influence extended far beyond brewing. Several Schützenbergers were notable French artists. There were also politicians and scientists. The family was originally from Alsace. They adhered to the Lutheran faith.

Georges-Frédéric Schützenberger served as mayor of Strasbourg. He was appointed by the July Monarchy. He held office from 1837 to 1848. Pierre Schützenberger was a physician. He served as an expert in the Papin sisters’ trial. Charles Schützenberger was a doctor at the Strasbourg Faculty of Medicine. His bust is still displayed at the Civil Hospital. Paul-René Schützenberger was a renowned impressionist painter. Louis Frédéric Schützenberger was his cousin. He painted “The Exodus” in 1872. It depicts an Alsatian family leaving their homeland. It is on display at the Mulhouse Museum of Fine Arts. Marcel-Paul Schützenberger played a key role in creating theoretical computer science in France. Many family members rest in the Sainte-Hélène cemetery in Schiltigheim.

Now, regarding the bridge itself: a wooden bridge once stood here. In 1871 it was replaced with a stone bridge. The Pont Schützenberger has been modified several times since then. It was widened in 1999. This was to accommodate the passage of the tram.

The Schützenberger brewery was once located nearby. Jean-Daniel Schützenberger married Anne-Catherine Bickelhaub on May 20 1766. She was the widow Klein. She owned the brewery. That is how the Schützenberger name became linked to beer history.

The Schützenberger brewery became the Grande Brasserie de la Patrie during the French Revolution. In 1844, Schützenberger introduced a new technique. It involved bottom fermentation. The first brewery cellars were dug in Schiltigheim. The brewery operated at full capacity until 1968. That was when a first attempt to sell the brewery failed.

Though the brewery closed in 2006 after facing financial difficulties, its legacy lives on. The Schützenberger name remains a symbol of Strasbourg’s rich past.
