Established in November 1980 Kehillat Shaarei Torah stands proudly on Bayview Avenue. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. A community forged from the dreams of South African Jews. Jews who sought a new life in Canada during the late 1970s. They yearned to recreate the vibrant Jewish life they knew. They longed to share their traditions in their new home.
Kehillat Shaarei Torah wasn’t built overnight. It was a labor of love. A testament to their resilience. Many of these immigrants had modest means. Raising funds presented a significant challenge. Yet they persevered. With the support of the established Toronto Jewish community their dream took shape. They secured a property. They hired a rabbi. They opened their doors.
Since its inception Kehillat Shaarei Torah has seen four rabbis lead its congregation. Rabbi Eliot Feldman guided the community from 1981 to 1988 laying a strong foundation. Rabbi Steven Cohen continued this work from 1988 to 1992. Rabbi Reuven Tradburks served from 1992 to 2009 nurturing the community’s growth. Currently Rabbi Joe Kanofsky leads Kehillat Shaarei Torah since 2009. He continues the legacy of faith and community building.
Sadly Kehillat Shaarei Torah faced adversity in 2024. The synagogue was vandalized twice. In April five windows were smashed. In May a masked individual was caught on camera causing further damage. The Toronto Police Hate Crime Unit investigated these acts of hate. The incidents underscore the importance of community unity and resilience.
Today Kehillat Shaarei Torah remains a vibrant center of Modern Orthodox Jewish life in Toronto. It offers a full calendar of services. It provides educational programs for all ages. It fosters a strong sense of community and belonging. It stands as a symbol of hope and perseverance. A beacon of faith and tradition. A testament to the strength of the human spirit. A place where memories are made and where generations connect. A true heart of the community.
