Established in 1546 Augustów in Warsaw is a fascinating place. It’s named after King Zygmunt August. He established it to commemorate his first meeting with Barbara Radziwill. The original settlement however dates back to 1496. It was then known as Metenburg under the rule of the Teutonic Knights. Queen Bona Sforza Zygmunt’s mother acquired the land in 1555. Augustów received city rights two years later.

Centuries of history unfolded within Augustów’s walls. Swedish invasions and Tatar attacks scarred the town. A devastating plague also struck. The 19th century saw some improvement. The Augustów Canal a technological marvel was built. This connected the Vistula and Niemen rivers. A main road from Warsaw to St Petersburg was also constructed.

Tragedy struck during the November Uprising and World War I. Augustów suffered immense destruction. During World War II the Soviet Union occupied the town until 1941. Many residents were exiled to Kazakhstan. The Soviets murdered Polish prisoners shortly before the German capture. The Nazis occupied Augustów until 1944. They ran a forced labor camp. World War II destroyed about 70% of the town. Most residents died or left. A large Jewish community perished in a ghetto.

The Soviets conducted the Augustów roundup in 1945. This was a brutal operation targeting Armia Krajowa fighters. These anticommunist fighters were likely executed. Their burial sites remain unknown. This roundup is considered one of the largest Soviet crimes in Poland after World War II.

Despite this dark past Augustów flourished. It became a popular spa and holiday destination. It’s known for its treatment of heart and circulatory diseases. The climate and coniferous trees’ essential oils contribute to this. Augustów remains a beautiful area with many lakes. It is a popular spot for water sports. People come to Augustów for a relaxing time close to nature. Kayaking and boat tours are extremely popular. The town’s charm lies in its rich history and natural beauty.
