“How many ghosts do you think reside here?” someone whispers beside you. That’s the question many ask when they visit this temple. Welcome to Kakushoji. It is a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist temple in Tokyo. It is a place of history and also modern connections.

Kakushoji’s story began long ago. In 1561, a man named Koun Ryu is born. He later became Ryukoku. He built a temple in Kyoto. Later, in 1594, the temple moved to Edo. This year is celebrated as Kakushoji’s founding.

The temple has faced many challenges. Fires destroyed it several times. The Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 also caused damage. In 1929, Kakushoji moved to its current location in Chofu.

During World War II, the military forced Kakushoji to move. This was due to the expansion of the Chofu Airfield. The temple buildings were moved about 900 meters.

Today, Kakushoji stands as a testament to resilience. The main hall was rebuilt in 2001. The guest hall was renewed in 2007.

Kakushoji is more than just old buildings. It is a place where people come together. The temple holds regular events and gatherings. There are study sessions. There are classes. People deepen their connections here.

One special feature is the connection to manga artist Shigeru Mizuki. Mizuki is famous for “GeGeGe no Kitaro.” His grave is at Kakushoji. Fans come from all over to visit. The grave features characters from his manga.

Mizuki also gifted a painting to Kakushoji. It is called “Niga Byakudo Zu”. This work is only displayed during special events.

Kakushoji is easily accessible. It is near Chofu Station on the Keio Line. Buses also stop nearby.

The temple has a long history. It offers many activities. It even has a connection to manga. Kakushoji welcomes everyone to experience its unique atmosphere. Take a moment. Reflect on the temple’s journey. Think about the people who have walked here before. What do you feel?
