Picture this grand Victorian mansion. This is Smithfield Grange in Coogee. Built in 1883 it stands proudly on Brook Street. John Starkey a successful soft drink manufacturer built it. He named it after his birthplace Smithfield in London. Starkey’s ginger beer was a massive success. His distinctive bottles are collector’s items today. The business thrived for decades. It eventually became part of Shelley’s then Coca-Cola Amatil.
Smithfield Grange wasn’t just a home. It was a symbol of success. It shows Coogee’s history. The area was growing but still sparsely populated. Smithfield Grange dominated the landscape. It had a striking tower. The house originally occupied a large block. Smithfield Avenue leads to Bardon Park. This park was once called Smithfield Park.
Starkey’s influence extended beyond business. He served on Randwick Council. He married Frances E Crittenden. They had three sons and three daughters. Starkey died at Smithfield Grange in 1898. He left a substantial estate. His wealth is impressive even today. Adjusted for inflation it’s worth millions. The house changed hands several times. It was divided into apartments.
There was even a threat of demolition in 1990. Thankfully Smithfield Grange survived. It was sold in 2019 for 6.3 million dollars. The new owners planned restoration. The house stands as a testament to the past. It is a stunning example of Victorian architecture. It’s a wonderful reminder of Coogee’s rich history.
