Wasn’t Storskogen once just forest and meadows? Imagine that. Now look around you. Storskogen. This bustling Stockholm suburb didn’t always exist. Before the 1950s this area was a tranquil mix of trees and open fields. It was a quiet corner of Solna parish technically part of Sundbyberg’s estate. In 1884 it became part of Bromma before finally joining Sundbyberg in 1888. For decades Storskogen remained largely untouched by the city’s growth. Then came the plans. The plans for a new residential area.

The Forvaltaren a public housing company spearheaded the transformation of Storskogen. Their first major project was building Storskogen itself. From 1950 to 1958 construction crews worked tirelessly shaping this quiet area into a residential community. Carl-Evin Sandberg a prominent architect designed the residential buildings. His vision gave Storskogen its unique character.

The result was striking. Storskogen boasts a distinctive ring of K-marked slab blocks. These surround Storskogsparken the highest point in Storskogen. Besides these iconic structures you’ll find star-shaped buildings and high-rises. A small number of villas add a touch of variety to the landscape. The area also incorporates the Näckrosen metro station which provides convenient access to the rest of Stockholm.

By 2011 Storskogen housed 2755 people. This represented 7% of Sundbyberg’s total population. In that same year 22.3% of Storskogen’s residents had a foreign background. This was lower than Sundbyberg’s overall average of 35.2%. The community comprises 1669 residences. Around 90% are rental apartments while 9% are owner-occupied. The remaining 1% is divided among other ownership types.

Storskogen’s story is one of remarkable change. From a peaceful expanse of nature to a vibrant residential area. A testament to planning and community development. This is Storskogen a piece of Stockholm’s history woven into its modern fabric. A place where the past and present coexist harmoniously. A place to explore and appreciate.
